Yesterday I went with my family to se How to Train Your Dragon 2. I don’t know why, but I’ve never been more excited to go see a movie in my entire life. Seriously, this movie has invaded my dreams for the last couple months. That’s never happened before.
The movie did not disappoint.
Beautiful animation, fantastic new dragons, and epic composition to scenes. DreamWorks made a big step up in the quality of their craft for this movie. I loved the body language and facial expressions of the dragons, especially Toothless. Toothless manages to communicate very well despite his lack of human speech. We know exactly what he’s thinking.
As for the story, they aged it up along with the characters. Not in a bad way, but in a good one. All their actions have consequences. Permanent consequences, just like they established in HTTYD when Hiccup lost his leg. I shed tears. Much emotion was had, both sad, happy, and silly.
And just like my writing teacher Carol Lynch Williams said, someone in a story has to be dead or naked, or both. This movie does have one of those.
Also, Hiccup’s mother is a great character. I love how feral and dragon-ish she was, while still very human. My only complaint about the movie was that I think she could have been better developed. A bit more rounded out.
Overall, I love this movie. I will own it and watch it again and again. It gets five out of five stars.
And I MUST get my hands on the art book! It will be mine.
